A man being held at the Hempstead County jail in Hope is facing new felony charges after allegedly breaking a window and assaulting a correctional officer.
Authorities say Kevin Edward Hurt, 36, cracked a window in a holding cell late on March 30. Hours later, he reportedly attacked a correctional officer while staff were trying to place him in a restraint chair. Hurt allegedly put the officer in a chokehold and slammed him into the wall before being secured.
Hurt now faces charges of assault and impairing the operation of a public facility. A judge has ordered a mental evaluation. Hurt also has pending felony charges in Nevada County and remains in custody after his bond was revoked earlier this week.
