A new historical marker honoring Wavell’s Colony — the first organized European settlement in what’s now Red River, Bowie, and Miller counties — was rededicated Friday in Texarkana.
The marker replaces one installed in 1969 at the old Howard Johnson Hotel that went missing after the building’s demolition in 2015.
Now placed near the post office and courthouse on State Line, city officials say it helps preserve the region’s early history and reminds residents of the community’s roots and future vision.
