Ken Paxton has launched an investigation into more than 1,000 cities across Texas, including Texarkana and Tyler, over alleged unlawful tax increases.
According to the Attorney General’s Office, cities are required under Senate Bill 1851 to complete and publicly post annual financial audits by a set deadline. Cities that fail to meet those requirements are not allowed to increase property tax revenue.
Paxton is requesting documents from the cities to ensure they are complying with audit and transparency rules before raising taxes this fiscal year.
City officials in Tyler say they responded to the request within 30 minutes. The Attorney General’s Office has not released a full list of cities under investigation.
Officials say residents who believe their city is violating the law can file a complaint through the Attorney General’s website.
