From the Texarkana Arkansas Police Department: A new scam is making the rounds as stormy weather moves in.

Scammers are sending text messages that appear to be from utility companies, warning of possible power outages due to freezing temperatures. The messages include a link claiming to show an outage map.

Officials warn the texts are fake. Clicking the link could install malware on your phone or send you to a fake website designed to steal personal information.

If you’re concerned about outages, check your utility provider’s official website or app. Never click links in unexpected text messages.
